Where do young children get their calcium and vitamin D?

Calcium and vitamin D are important nutrients for growing children, but which foods are actually providing them?

What We Did and Why We Did It

Researchers from the Guelph Family Health Study examined the diets of young children to find out where these important nutrients are coming from.

Calcium and vitamin D are essential for healthy growth and bone development during childhood. Understanding where children get these nutrients can help inform nutrition recommendations and support families in making food choices that meet children’s nutrient needs.

What we found

What we can learn from this

Milk was the largest contributor to both calcium and vitamin D intake among the children studied. Cheese and yogurt were also important sources of calcium, while fortified foods played an important role in providing vitamin D.

This research helps us better understand which foods are contributing key nutrients to young children’s diets. These findings can help guide future nutrition education and support healthy eating habits during childhood.
